La memoria es una nube de humo y ceniza.

Forgotten Land aborda fotográficamente la relación tiempo-espacio-memoria en el contexto límite de una catástrofe natural por la que han pasado tres años de olvido. El 26 de octubre de 2010, la isla de Java vivió la última erupción del volcán Gunung Merapi con más de 300 muertos y 150.000 evacuados. Aldeas enteras se cubrieron de ceniza. En su abandono encierran una cápsula del tiempo que también habita en el recuerdo de quienes vivenciaron los hechos.
En clave poética, la memoria es una nube de humo y ceniza que captura el acontecer humano. Sobre su poso cimentamos presente y porvenir. La cámara enfoca en macro contra este marco metafórico. Y como la propia memoria, dispara sobre el espacio y el tiempo desde el aquí y ahora para recrear un mnemo-universo donde el tiempo se proyecta en el espacio y el espacio en el tiempo. Es la memoria que gravita en estas casas abandonadas quien posa sobre la quietud y silencio de la fotografía, instantánea a su vez del espacio-tiempo. Retratar recupera su sentido etimológico de hacer volver atrás, revivir…
Las viviendas encierran un inquietante vacío sensible a la impresión fotográfica. El punto de mira se distancia con un plano general muy abierto que parece dejar sitio al recuerdo. Su intimista lejanía para con el ser humano, minimizado en un espacio sobredimensionado que magnifica su fragilidad, convierte las habitaciones en estancias psíquicas, cuyas fugas a lo claro y lo oscuro remiten a la memoria y al olvido. Las fotos emanan un fulgor nocturno, casi lunar. En esta atmósfera, vaga y onírica, la levedad del instante cobra visos de eternidad.
Tampoco escapa al ojo de Forgotten Land la huella del desastre sobre los objetos inanimados. Testigos mudos de nuestra existencia, reclaman ahora un primerísimo plano porque guardan el ascua que la memoria aviva. Su fuerza expresiva se presta a un retrato animista con el que conquistan el alma que la cotidianeidad les niega. En su deterioro pregonan la precariedad de lo que alguna vez dimos por sentado. Transmutados en símbolos, nos suplantan más humanos que nunca para evocar ausencias y pérdidas. Con su ambigua belleza, también ellos se sobreponen a lo traumático. La vida, que cíclicamente explota, gana siempre en el eterno ciclo creación/destrucción.

Forgotten Land deals with the relationship of time, space and memory photographically, within the borderline environment of a natural catastrophe after three years of oblivion have elapsed. On October 26, 2010, the island of Java lived through the latest eruption of the Gunung Merapi volcano, with more than 300 deaths and 150,000 evacuees. Entire villages were covered in ash. In this abandoned state, they preserve a time capsule which also endures in the memory of those who experienced the actual events.
Memory is like a cloud of smoke and ash that records human events in a poetic register. As it settles, we build the foundations of present and future onto it. The camera focuses close in to counteract this metaphoric framework. And like memory itself, it is cast over time and space from the here and now, recreating a mnemo-universe in which time is projected into space, and space into time. The memory that gravitates within these abandoned homes is the subject which poses amid the stillness and silence of the photograph, creating a snapshot of time and space. The portrait takes on a new meaning by making us look back in time, reliving…
The dwellings enclose a troubling emptiness sensitive to the photographic impression. The viewfinder draws away in a very wide-angle shot which appears to leave space for remembering. Its intimist distance towards human beings, minimized within an oversized space that magnifies their frailty, turns the rooms into psychic chambers, whose fugues to light and dark are reminiscent of both memory and forgetting. The photos emanate a nocturnal, almost lunar gleam. In this atmosphere, foggy and dreamlike, the lightness of the instant acquires the lustre of eternity.
The mark which the disaster has left behind on these inanimate objects does not escape the eye in Forgotten Land either. Silent witnesses of our existence, they now move to the very forefront, because they safeguard the ember which memory keeps burning. Their expressive force lends itself to an animist portrait through which they conquer the soul which everyday existence denies them. Their deterioration cries out about the precariousness of things we once took for granted. Transmuted into symbols, they impersonate us, more human than ever, to evoke what is absent and lost. With their ambiguous beauty, they too overcome the traumatic. Life, which blossoms cyclically, always wins in the eternal cycle of creation and destruction.
